Performer Notes
  • Following the overwhelming success of her 2010 debut, Crazy for You, Bethany Cosentino aka Best Coast is prepped to return with another album of melodic beach punk with second album The Only Place. The pre-released title track and first single, a jangly ode to California as a place that has "the ocean, the babes, the sun, the waves," asks the question "Why would you live anywhere else?" If its fuzz bass and slightly '90s alt-rock underpinnings are any indicator of the rest of the album, The Only Place will be a catchy hook-fest. The album is slated to come out at the same time as Cosentino's first clothing line, carried exclusively by Urban Outfitters, and as characteristically sunny and cheerful as her sounds.
Professional Reviews
Entertainment Weekly (p.72) - "Cosentino perfectly captures the mythic California of backlit palm-tree postcards....But she also makes California's scuzzier side seem romantic..." -- Grade: A-

Alternative Press (p.78) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[T]he record is sophisticated....THE ONLY PLACE mainly focuses on mid-tempo mood pieces: torchy ballads, wholesome '50s-rock, PET SOUNDS-esque shimmer-pop and and twangy indie..."

Magnet (p.54) - "Produced by Jon Brion, THE ONLY PLACE forgoes fuzz and focuses on Cosentino's charming, forlorn vocals, chic and clean garage riffs, and retro-fabulous grooves."

Kerrang (Magazine) (p.53) - "BC's second album fizzes with both upbeat hymns to fun in the sun and achingly sad odes to lost love."

Q (Magazine) (p.97) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "This second album ditches the distortion in favour of cleaner textures....There's no denying THE ONLY PLACE's indomitable West Coast pop-rock melodies and sugary thrills."

Mojo (Publisher) (p.83) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "THE ONLY PLACE has sharper edges than the blurry Polaroid vibe of 2010's debut CRAZY FOR YOU, both musically and emotionally..."

Uncut (magazine) (p.69) - "[I]ndie pop infused with the melodrama of The Ronettes and The Shangri-Las."
