  • The Contempo Trio, consisting of drummer Danny Gottlieb, bassist Chip Jackson, pianist Mark Soskin, and guest saxophonist Ravi Coltrane, was evidently a one-shot meeting for the four musicians, though it is hard to tell due to the lack of liner notes. In any case, the players hit it off rather well as they performed a mix of established jazz compositions, lesser-known works, and a few originals. Soskin is best known as a member of Sonny Rollins' band, though he previously had a few dates of his own under his belt prior to this session. He shines in the trio setting of Kenny Barron's "Delores Street." Jackson gained great exposure as the longtime bassist in the Billy Taylor Trio and shares a common link with Ravi Coltrane, as both men are veterans of Elvin Jones' band. He wrote the driving post-bop cooker "No JAMF's Allowed" (a title likely inspired by tenor saxophonist Johnny Griffin's earlier piece "The JAMFs Are Coming"). Gottlieb, who is equally at home in mainstream and jazz fusion, provides the album's strong pulse. At the time of recording, Coltrane was still a few years away from leading his first album of his own, but he already shows a tremendous confidence on tenor sax -- yet it is his magical work on soprano sax in the dreamy interpretation of Duke Ellington's "In a Sentimental Mood" that leaves the most lasting impression. Evidently long out of print, this 1994 CD is still fairly easy and inexpensive to acquire. ~ Ken Dryden
Professional Reviews
JazzTimes (4/95, p.98) - "...swings surely and maturely, casts a fine melancholy spell as needed and listens as it goes. Each player is a proponent of rhythmic energy, although a couple of Bill Evans-influenced ballad readings...show a more sensitive side..."
