Performer Notes

  • Haynes DAD: Ultimate Guide to Rock is a 60-track triple-disc compilation of classic rock favorites that was released in the United Kingdom by Sony Music a few weeks before the Father's Day holiday in 2010. The album is packaged like a Haynes manual. Well regarded among men, Haynes is an English company that specializes in do-it-yourself manuals for automobile maintenance. Over the years the company has released practical manuals for a range of different subject matters, some of them tongue in cheek. Haynes DAD: Ultimate Guide to Rock isn't so much a practical manual as it is a run-of-the-mill classic rock compilation amusingly packaged to resemble one. While the material comprising the compilation may be run-of-the-mill, at least there's not an abundance of filler. In fact, all of the material on Haynes DAD: Ultimate Guide to Rock is first rate. Every song is an album-oriented rock staple if not a certifiable hit single. The problem is that the material is scattershot. Much of it dates back to the 1970s and 1980s, but there's also material from the 1950s and 1960s as well as the 1990s and 2000s. Moreover, the rock styles are remarkably divergent, ranging from alternative rock and heavy metal to pop/rock and folk-rock. As a result, Haynes DAD: Ultimate Guide to Rock plays seemingly at random, for instance jumping from Judas Priest's "Breaking the Law" to the Patti Smith Group's "Because the Night" on disc one, Hall & Oates' "Maneater" to Kansas' "Dust in the Wind" on disc two, and Roy Orbison's "I Drove All Night" to Nickelback's "Rockstar" on disc three. The randomness aside, Haynes DAD: Ultimate Guide to Rock is chock-full of great tunes that any dad with a taste for rock is sure to enjoy. ~ Jason Birchmeier

How awesome is this product? While this does seem like an interesting question for the writer of a review to ask, in this context it is used to illuminate how staggeringly brilliant this is as a Father's Day gift. If Father's Day attracted the same stockings that are synonymous with Christmas gift giving, the "DAD" album would make the essential-stocking-filler list. In fact, this album is so perfect for fathers everywhere, I even recommend buying one if you already have a present for him this year and giving it as a Christmas present. The ultimate barbeque ambience or accompaniment for when dad wants to rock out solo with the tools. Rock on dads!
