Performer Notes
  • Personnel: Ike Turner (guitar, piano); Clayton Love, Matt Cockrell, Billy Gayles (vocals); Calvin Newborn (guitar); Eugene Fox (saxophone); Raymond Hill (tenor saxophone); Jess Knight Jr. (bass guitar); Eugene Washington, Willie Sims (drums).
  • This excellent two-disc compilation is a testament to Ike Turner's legacy as a rock-&-roll and R&B pioneer. Although the incendiary "Rocket 88," recorded for Sun Studios and sometimes heralded at the first true rock-&-roll recording, is absent here, CLASSIC EARLY SIDES charts Turner's dynamic early work as both a leader ("You're Driving Me Insane") and a sideman ("Baby Please"). The music, which draws on jump blues, urban blues, and proto-rock and soul, bursts at the seams with vital energy, not least because of Turner's sharp arrangements, bandleading skills, and way around the piano and guitar. This comes recommended for any fan of `50s rock and R&B.
