The Rag Trade is a classic early BBC sitcom, set in the workshop of a small clothing company Fenner Fashions where the management Harold Fenner battles continually with the workers, led by trade union shop steward Paddy.
Nothing ever runs smoothly at the Fenner Fashions workshop. It's a hotbed of industrial strife and class warfare, with fibre brand shop steward Paddy (Miriam Karlin) battling it out with penny pinching proprietor Harold Fenner (Peter Jones) at every opportunity. It only takes the slightest provocation for Paddy to blow her whistle and yell "everybody out." Poor foreman Reg (Reg Varney) is stuck in the middle of the fight and getting it in the neck from both sides! Sheila Hancock as Carole and Esma Cannon as Little Lil are amongst the long suffering workforce.
Written and created by Ronald Wolfe and Ronald Chesney.
