Based on actual events, LORD OF WAR is a comedy/drama starring Nicholas Cage as international arms smuggler Uri Orlov.
The story follows Uri from his humble beginnings as a Soviet immigrant in 1970s Brooklyn and peaks with his involvement in selling off the stockpiled arsenal of post-Cold War Ukraine to - among other top clients - the sadistic African dictator Andre Baptiste, Sr. (Eamonn Walker). While this is happening, Uris little brother Vitaly (Jared Leto) starts getting in the way of business with his conscience and his burgeoning cocaine habit.
Also co-starring Ethan Hawke as a sanctimonious Interpol agent with a vendetta against Uri, LORD OF WAR is an eye-opening satirical film about the perils of gun-running.

Excellent movie. Nick Cage portrays this arms merchant with real flair and an absolute lack of morality and yet he does it so well. The story itself paints a very dark picture of how illegal arms are in fact allowed to occur by the powers that be. Ethan Hawke plays his character with conviction also. This is definitely a movie to see.

According to this DVD, it is based on real life events. This you can certainly believe. Cage plays a Ukrainian, who comes to the USA as a boy. One day he has an epiphany while talking to his brother in their ordinary restaurant. Everybody needs to eat, everybody needs violence, and hence guns, so he sets out to become an arms dealer. Starting local, with gangs, and moving up to trade fairs. This is not a stable life, and he even pursues the supermodel woman of his dreams by deception. At times very black comedy, the movie pulls no punches.

Having such a likeable bad guy as the main character in "Lord of War" makes challenging viewing but it's clear by the end of the movie who the real villain is. Cage is fantastic as a freelance gun runner supplying weapons to governments and terrorists on both sides of the firing line. Funny in a dark, dark way, "Lord of War" is a compelling satire for our current times.
