Ian Dougherty is a Dunedin-based journalist and historian. He has a Master of Arts degree in history from Otago University and a Diploma in Journalism from Canterbury University. He is the author of 26 books on New Zealand history, biography, culture and society, including biographies of legendary gold prospector William James 'Arawata Bill' O'Leary and writer, publisher and long distance walker Alfred Hamish Reed.
