The gypsy story and the black magic are good, but again this book doesn't have the ethereal writing quality I have come to expect from de Lint after reading the Newford books. That slight disappointment aside, however, the tale kept me enthralled and the romansch used in the romany dialogue fascinated the linguist in me. I particularly enjoyed the afterword, where de Lint tears down the tendency of sociologists to get belleding-heart-liberal mad at white people who write about other cultures.
