Reviews

English review follows Ffrwyth bron i ddeugain mlynedd o wethio fel ffotograffydd i wahanol bapurau sydd yn y gyfrol yma. Dwin siwr fod dewis a dethol wedi bod yn anodd iawn, ond yr hyn a gawn yw cyfres o luniau wedi'i rhannun gategorau, ac yn adlewyrchun bennaf y math o luniau roedd galw amdanyn nhw yn y North Wales Weekly News ar Bangor Mail. Ond yn y dewis rydyn ni hefyd yn cael cyfle i ddod i adnabod Gwyn Roberts. Er mai fel ffotograffydd maen cael ei gofio yn y gyfrol, bu'n gwneud y gwaith hwnnw tra oedd hefyd yn gweithio ir NFU Mutual o ddydd i ddydd. Maer rhagair cynhwysfawr yn rhoi cyfle i ni ddysgu amdano fe fel person yn hytrach nag fel ffotograffydd yn unig, ac mae hynnyn cyfoethogir profiad o astudio'r lluniau. Efallai nad yw bandiau pres a threnau yn apelio at bawb, ond o glywed ychydig o hanes Gwyn maen amlwg pam eu bod yn bwysig iddo! Maer straeon am ei brofiadau gyda gwahanol fandiau yn werth eu darllen. Ceir cymysgedd o wahanol fathau o luniau yn y gyfrol. Mae na ambell dirlun hynod o brydferth, ond y lluniau o bobl a digwyddiadau ywr rhai fydd yn aros yn y cof. Mae Gwyn Roberts yn llwyddo i gyfleu symudiad, bywyd a chymeriad yn ei waith. Ymhlith y lluniau mwyaf cofiadwy i mi maer un o Nel Grug yn arddangos ei cheffyl yn sioe Ysbyty Ifan, a hefyd llun du a gwyn or Archdderwydd W R P George a nifer o swyddogion yr Orsedd ar ddechrau'r 90au. Drwyddi draw mae hiwmor yr awdur / ffotograffydd iw glywed yn y disgrifiadau dwyieithog syn cyd-fynd r lluniau. Y trueni mawr yw bod llawer o waith Gwyn Roberts, fel sy'n cael ei grybwyll yn y rhagair, wedi'i golli mewn tn yn 1993. Maer hyn sydd yn y gyfrol hon yn rhoi syniad i ni o faint y golled honno. This volume is the result of almost forty years of working as a photographer for various papers, and selecting which photographs to include must have been an arduous task, but what we are presented with is a series of pictures divided into categories, which represent the types of pictures which were in demand by the readers of the North Wales Weekly News and the Bangor Mail. Naturally, by studying the photographs we also get to know the photographer his traits and interests, and the book's preface provides us with further useful information. Brass bands and trains may not be to everyone's taste, but they clearly play a large part in Gwyn's life, and his entertaining recollections about various experiences with both bands and trains are worth reading! The volume is a mix of all types of photographs, including some beautiful ones of the north Wales landscape, as expected. But it's the people in the photos which make this a memorable book, from a little girl winning a prize in a village show to the colourful Gorsedd of the bards in the National Eisteddfod in the early 90s. And throughout, the photographer's humour and warmth is conveyed. Sadly, Gwyn Roberts lost many of his photos in a fire in 1993. While appreciating the photos included in this book, we can only guess at what treasures have been lost.
