When I have kids, I hope they think that foraging for food is the norm, and that supermarkets are convenient but a bit odd. Annie Raser-Rowland and Adam Grubb have been normalizing and educating about foraging for food for years with their book The Weed Forager’s Handbook. And now they have published a wonderful guide to foraging for kids Let’s Eat Weeds! I have a few kids on my list who I know will really love this - to be honest I have quite a few adults who would love it too! The book separates 15 weeds into easy and advanced, and for each has a good amount of structured detail - what to look for, where to look, when to look, how to pick and prepare, and how to use it. The recipes are kid (and adult) friendly but with weeds as the hero, which I really like. Think purslane yoghurt dip, cheese ‘n’ weed pie and wild weed salad. There are a few activities to encourage kids to be observant of plants, and learn about plant identification in a fun way. A pretty great way of reinforcing the importance of knowing what you are looking at before harvesting or eating! Beautifully illustrated by Evie Barrow.
