Reviews

?. . . With its comprehensiveness, richness, and range of coverage, this reference volume will be useful to anyone interested in recent economic and business development in China.?-American Reference Books Annual

?Here are two more volumes in this "China Statistics Series" based on the work of the State Statistical Bureau of the People's Republic of China. As with the other two volumes--China Statistical Abstract 1988 and China Social Statistics 1986--current and retrospective statistics are provided through dozens of tables. Rural Statistics is divided into 11 sections: "Rural Basic Statistics," "Total Output Value of Rural Society," "Output of Major Farm Crops, Livestock, and Township and Village Enterprises' Industrial Products," "Rural Commerce," "Economic Efficiency," "Rural Financial Statistics," "Income and Living Expenditures of Rural Households," "Rural Production Conditions," "Rural Culture, Education, Health Care and Social Welfare," "Ranking of Regions by Selected Indicators," and "Selected Indicators at County Level." The four sections of Trade and Price Statistics are "Domestic Trade," "Price Indexes and Average Prices," "Foreign Economic Relations and Trade," and "Tourism." Although there is some duplication of data among the four volumes, even tables that bear nearly identical headings do not always present the same data. For example, table 8.17 of China Statistical Abstract, "Average Per Capita Consumption of Consumer Goods of Rural Households," and table 7.4 of China Rural Statistics, "Per Capita Consumption of Major Consumer Goods by Rural Households," both contain data for 1980, 1985, 1986, and 1987, but the former adds coverage for 1978, and the latter adds some additional categories and subcategories of products. As a rule, subject-specific volumes provide more detailed tables and categories of information. Future volumes in the series will cover rural, urban, industrial, and population statistics; in addition, there are State Statistical Bureau data volumes by other publishers, e.g., China Urban Statistics 1985 and A Survey of Income and Expenditure of Households in China, 1986 . . . most suitable for significant China studies collections. . . .?-Choice

?This reference guide is the latest collection of statistics on domestic and foreign trade, prices, and tourism in China. . . . All statistics are arranged in time-series tables from the early 1950s through 1987. The introduction comes complete with brief explanatory notes on the statistical topics covered as well as a tabular guide with footnotes to help the reader decipher the statistical information. . . . This volume is essential for anyone researching purchasing power, consumption of major products, cost of living, and other hard-to-get numbers. The guide will prove invaluable both to businesspeople tracking trends in the China trade and to academic specialists.?-The China Business Review
