When the Cuthberts send to an orphanage for a boy to help them at Green Gables, their farm in Canada, they are astonished when a talkative little girl steps off the train. Anne, red-headed, pugnacious and incurably romantic, causes chaos at Green Gables and in the village, but her wit and good nature delight the fictional community of Prince Edward Island, Canada, and ensure that Anne of Green Gables continues to be a firm favourite with readers worldwide. 'Anne of Avonlea' continues Anne's story. Now half-past sixteen but as strong-headed and romantic as ever, Anne becomes a teacher at her old school and dreams of its improvement. But her responsible position and mature ambitions do not prevent her entanglement in the scrapes that still seem to beset her in spite of her best intentions. Thoroughly charming and amusing, with a supporting cast of colourful and endearing characters, both books will enchant and entertain readers, guaranteeing that Anne's adventures capture their affections as well as their imaginations. AUTHOR: Few writers can claim to have had a first novel more succesful than the Canadian writer L(ucy) M(aud) Montgomery (1874 - 1942) with 'Anne of Green Gables'. It sold over one million copies during her lifetime, and has been in print ever since, together with the various sequels that she wrote.

Nova Scotia-born children's author Wilson gives us the backstory to a classic, imagining little orphan Anne of Green Gables before she found her new family. Look for the 100th-anniversary edition of L.M. Montgomery's beloved work (ISBN 978-0-399-15478-2. $19.95). Copyright 2007 Reed Business Information.

Gr 5-7-With a full cast and some background music, this radio play version of Lucy Maud Montgomery's classic hits the high points of the original novel. It is quite abbreviated, so each episode in Anne's orphan-girl-made-good story is afforded just enough time to lay out the bones of the plot. However, Anne's spunky and endearing character shines through scene after scene, as does some of the nostalgic charm of Avonlea's Canadian setting and quaint old Green Gables. All the parts are read very well, with a touching intensity that makes up for some of the brevity of plot episodes. A narrator fills in quite smoothly between the scenes for each event. Two nice features for young listeners make this a useful introduction to audio fiction. There is a pleasant chime played at the end of each side, and at the beginning of each side a line or two from the preceding side is repeated, helping to move listeners smoothly through the break in the action. This entertaining version may help lead youngsters to the original novel. School and public libraries seeking to add abridged novels to their collections or to introduce or entice young readers to longer fiction will want to consider this version.-Jane P. A true classic from L. M. Montgomery, detailing the life of Anne with an 'E' as she goes through school, deals with bullying, finds a best friend, and so on. A well written and classic piece of literature that will engage you from the very start. Well worth buying, because you should have this classic on your shelves for both you, and your children!

Anne of Green Gables is an enchanting novel written for both old and young. I read it after watching the film and it remains one of my most favourite books, probably my favourite. The descriptions of the scenery on Prince Edward Island are so beautiful and it made me curious to visit the Island on which Montgomery based this novel. Anne is a great heroine - she is REALISTIC! Full of flaws but at the same time full of love, truth and ambition.
